This is the last precision component in the fuel path. Everything upstream exists to deliver clean fuel at stable pressure; this unit decides when combustion starts and how completely the charge burns. That is why injector condition shows up so directly in noise, smoke and emissions.
Watch for hard hot starting, uneven idle, visible smoke, a misfire that clears when the engine is revved, and consumption creeping up without any change in operating conditions.
Because those symptoms also point to compression, turbocharger or air-side problems, it is worth confirming before ordering. A return-flow (back-leakage) test across all injectors and a cylinder cut-out test will usually identify both whether the fault is injector-related and which cylinder is responsible.
