Spray pattern is set here. Hole geometry, needle lift and seat condition determine droplet size and penetration, and therefore how completely the charge burns. A seat that no longer seals will weep, producing carbon, poor starting and smoke even when the rest of the injector tests acceptably.
Nozzle faults usually show as poor atomisation: smoke that will not clear, hard starting, rough combustion, higher consumption, and heavy carbon around the tip when it is removed for inspection.
Confirm the diagnosis first: look for contamination elsewhere in the system and verify supply condition. A nozzle that cokes up again within weeks is a symptom of something else, not a defective nozzle.
Assembly notes: strict cleanliness, new washers and seals, correct torque, and no re-use of old copper. Where the system uses coded injectors, enter the codes after fitting or the ECU cannot compensate correctly.
