Every injection event depends on this pump producing pressure at exactly the right moment. Because it also carries its own lubrication, poor supply pressure and fuel dilution do disproportionate damage — which is why the supply side should always be checked alongside the pump itself. Symptoms associated with pump wear include hard starting when hot, loss of power, unstable idle, excess smoke, timing that will not hold, and in some cases diesel getting into the lubricating oil via a leaking drive shaft seal. Before condemning the pump, rule out the cheap causes: supply restrictions, a weak lift pump, air ingress on the suction side and a blocked filter. Check supply pressure and condition at the pump inlet first, then look at delivery and timing. Fitting notes: timing is everything here. Set the pump against the engine's timing marks rather than forcing anything, prime thoroughly before cranking, and check that the lift pump is delivering adequate supply pressure. Also replace the mounting seal and confirm there is no air left in the system before the first start.
