This unit sets both quantity and timing for every cylinder. Modern engines depend on that timing being accurate to well under a degree, so internal wear that would once have been tolerated now shows up as smoke, noise and failed emissions checks. Symptoms associated with pump wear include hard starting when hot, loss of power, unstable idle, excess smoke, timing that will not hold, and in some cases diesel getting into the lubricating oil via a leaking drive shaft seal. Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear. Plenty of pumps get replaced for a blocked filter or a suction leak that costs a fraction to put right. Key points: align to the timing marks rather than forcing the drive, prime before cranking, renew seals, confirm adequate supply pressure from the lift pump, and bleed the system fully. Skipping any of these is where most comebacks originate. How we build it: the unit is fully disassembled, cleaned and measured, not simply resealed. Wear items — seals, springs, and where clearance is out of specification the plunger and barrel or nozzle assemblies — are replaced rather than reused. Sealing faces and bores are re-machined back to original clearances, then the unit is calibrated and run on a bench with delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage recorded.
