This is the last precision component in the fuel path. Everything upstream exists to deliver clean fuel at stable pressure; this unit decides when combustion starts and how completely the charge burns. That is why injector condition shows up so directly in noise, smoke and emissions. Common indicators are rough or unstable idle, smoke that was not there before, higher fuel consumption on the same duty cycle, diesel knock under load, and in some cases fuel dilution of the engine oil from an injector that is leaking internally.
