Fuel is delivered to this injector already pressurised by the rail. What it contributes is timing and atomisation — opening and closing within milliseconds, several times per combustion event on modern engines. Small changes in spray pattern or opening behaviour show up quickly as noise, smoke and rising consumption.
What owners usually notice first: longer cranking, a rougher idle, more smoke than the engine used to produce, worse consumption, and occasionally a metallic knock that appears under load and clears once the engine is revved.
It costs little to confirm the diagnosis first. Compare return flow between cylinders and cut each injector in turn on a scan tool; if one cylinder makes no difference to running quality, that is your culprit.
Before fitting: clean the seat thoroughly, use new copper washers and seals, and torque the clamp to the engine manufacturer’s figure. Replace as a set where possible, and check whether the ECU needs the new units’ classification codes written in afterwards.
Rebuild process: full teardown and measurement first, then replacement of all wear components, machining back to specification where required, followed by calibration and bench testing.
