In a common rail system the injector is the component that actually controls combustion. It holds back fuel at rail pressure and lifts for only a few milliseconds at a time, metering the exact quantity and breaking it into a fine spray so the charge ignites cleanly. When delivery drifts, the engine does not usually stop — it simply starts to burn fuel badly. Typical signs are poor starting hot or cold depending on whether the unit is weeping or sticking, an idle that hunts or sounds uneven, smoke under acceleration, and sometimes a smell of diesel in the oil where an injector is leaking internally. It costs little to confirm the diagnosis first. Compare return flow between cylinders and cut each injector in turn on a scan tool; if one cylinder makes no difference to running quality, that is your culprit. Fit as a matched set rather than singly — one new injector among worn neighbours reproduces the uneven running you set out to cure. New sealing washers every time, clean seats, correct torque, and where applicable, program the injector codes into the ECU once fitted.
