This pump has two jobs that are easy to conflate: raising fuel to injection pressure, and metering the correct quantity at the correct moment. Wear affects both. The result is usually a combination of harder starting, drifting timing and visible smoke rather than one clean fault.
The pattern is normally cumulative: slightly harder starting, then noticeable power loss, then smoke and unstable idle. Where the drive seal has failed, diesel in the lubricating oil is the warning that should stop you running the engine.
Confirm you actually need a pump. Verify supply pressure at the inlet, check for air ingress and restrictions, and have delivery and timing tested on the bench — many 'worn pumps' turn out to be supply faults.
Installation notes: never rotate the pump by force to align it — bar the engine over instead. Prime before cranking, renew the drive seal, confirm supply pressure, and bleed the system properly. Dry running for even a few seconds is the most common cause of premature failure on an otherwise sound pump.
Rebuild process: full teardown and measurement first, then replacement of all wear components, machining back to specification where required, followed by calibration and bench testing.
