Failures tend to progress gradually — a little more smoke, slightly harder starting when hot, slowly rising consumption — which is why they are often attributed to the injectors before the pump is checked. Expect extended cranking especially when hot, hesitant throttle response, smoke that persists rather than clears, timing that drifts or will not hold, and in some cases fuel in the sump or a pump body running unusually hot. Before condemning the pump, rule out the cheap causes: supply restrictions, a weak lift pump, air ingress on the suction side and a blocked filter. Never force the shaft to align — turn the engine over to meet it. Prime the system before cranking, fit a new drive seal where specified, and verify supply pressure from the lift pump before start-up. Running a dry pump, even briefly, causes damage that no warranty will cover.
