The injection pump is what generates injection pressure and meters fuel to each cylinder in firing order. Because it also provides the timing reference, its condition affects starting, smoke, power and fuel consumption together — a pump that is worn rarely produces a single isolated symptom. The pattern is normally cumulative: slightly harder starting, then noticeable power loss, then smoke and unstable idle. Where the drive seal has failed, diesel in the lubricating oil is the warning that should stop you running the engine. Before condemning the pump, rule out the cheap causes: supply restrictions, a weak lift pump, air ingress on the suction side and a blocked filter. Check supply pressure and condition at the pump inlet first, then look at delivery and timing.
