Supply pressure, timing and delivery quantity are all set here. Failures tend to progress gradually — a little more smoke, slightly harder starting when hot, slowly rising consumption — which is why they are often attributed to the injectors before the pump is checked.
The pattern is normally cumulative: slightly harder starting, then noticeable power loss, then smoke and unstable idle. Where the drive seal has failed, diesel in the lubricating oil is the warning that should stop you running the engine.
Confirm you actually need a pump. Verify supply pressure at the inlet, check for air ingress and restrictions, and have delivery and timing tested on the bench — many 'worn pumps' turn out to be supply faults.
Fitment notes: this unit must be timed to the engine, not simply bolted on. Never force the shaft to align — turn the engine over to meet it. Running a dry pump, even briefly, causes damage that no warranty will cover.
