Every injection event depends on this pump producing pressure at exactly the right moment. Because it also carries its own lubrication, poor supply pressure and fuel dilution do disproportionate damage — which is why the supply side should always be checked alongside the pump itself. Typical indicators are progressively harder starting, particularly when hot, reduced power, smoke under load, erratic idle, and fuel dilution in the sump — the last one should always be investigated immediately. Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear. Plenty of pumps get replaced for a blocked filter or a suction leak that costs a fraction to put right. Fitting notes: timing is everything here. Set the pump against the engine's timing marks rather than forcing anything, prime thoroughly before cranking, and check that the lift pump is delivering adequate supply pressure. Also replace the mounting seal and confirm there is no air left in the system before the first start.
