This pump has two jobs that are easy to conflate: raising fuel to injection pressure, and metering the correct quantity at the correct moment. Wear affects both. The result is usually a combination of harder starting, drifting timing and visible smoke rather than one clean fault. Expect extended cranking especially when hot, hesitant throttle response, smoke that persists rather than clears, timing that drifts or will not hold, and in some cases fuel in the sump or a pump body running unusually hot. Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear. Plenty of pumps get replaced for a blocked filter or a suction leak that costs a fraction to put right. Key points: align to the timing marks rather than forcing the drive, prime before cranking, renew seals, confirm adequate supply pressure from the lift pump, and bleed the system fully. Skipping any of these is where most comebacks originate. How we build it: the unit is fully disassembled, cleaned and measured, not simply resealed. Wear items — seals, springs, and where clearance is out of specification the plunger and barrel or nozzle assemblies — are replaced rather than reused. Sealing faces and bores are re-machined back to original clearances, then the unit is calibrated and run on a bench with delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage recorded.
