This unit sets both quantity and timing for every cylinder. Modern engines depend on that timing being accurate to well under a degree, so internal wear that would once have been tolerated now shows up as smoke, noise and failed emissions checks. Look for extended cranking, especially hot, poor throttle response, smoke across the rev range, fluctuating idle speed, and a gradual rise in consumption that cannot be explained by duty cycle. Before condemning the pump, rule out the cheap causes: supply restrictions, a weak lift pump, air ingress on the suction side and a blocked filter. Check supply pressure and condition at the pump inlet first, then look at delivery and timing. Key points: align to the timing marks rather than forcing the drive, prime before cranking, renew seals, confirm adequate supply pressure from the lift pump, and bleed the system fully. Skipping any of these is where most comebacks originate.
