Modern engines depend on that timing being accurate to well under a degree, so internal wear that would once have been tolerated now shows up as smoke, noise and failed emissions checks. Typical indicators are progressively harder starting, particularly when hot, reduced power, smoke under load, erratic idle, and fuel dilution in the sump — the last one should always be investigated immediately. Diagnose the supply side before blaming the pump. Restricted filters, a tired lift pump or air being drawn into the suction line will produce symptoms almost identical to internal pump wear, and are far cheaper to resolve.
